Square Foot Garden Saga: Filling the Box

In a previous post, I finally got my Square Foot Garden box assembled. Now it’s time to drag the box outside and fill it up!

compost for my Square Foot Garden

First, we had to measure out and mix up the composts (an essential part of the Square Foot Garden soil mix). I could find only three kinds locally (cotton, mushroom, and manure). I ordered 30 pounds of worm castings from Amazon.com as a fourth compost.

Needless to say, the twins couldn’t resist playing in the compost!

After my big, strong teenager helped me mix the composts (actually, I helped him — he did most of the work), it was time to add the peat moss and coarse vermiculite. I had an awful time trying to locate the vermiculite! But the Lord provided, as always.

It was dark outside by the time we got the soil components combined and the box filled. I had the kids soak the soil with the hose; I wanted the water in the soil mix to be warmed by the sun by the time we did our planting on the following day.

Square Foot Garden costs so far

  • cow manure: $2.74
  • mushroom compost: $3.47
  • cotton compost: $3.65
  • worm castings: $40
  • peat moss: $11.00
  • coarse vermiculite: $24.99

Total cost to make “Mel’s Mix,” the soil for our Square Foot Garden: $85.85. Eeeek! Add to that the cost to build our “box,” and our costs so far are $228.48 for a single 4-foot by 4-foot raised bed with a plywood bottom and soil. (I think I need to lie down for awhile.)

Is having a Square Foot Garden worth it?

To me, yes. We’re on a budget, but I’m willing to make this investment for our health, for my kids’ training, and to make our family a little more self-sufficient. Together, we will plan menus using our home-grown produce. We will learn to preserve what we don’t use right away by dehydrating, canning and freezing our garden bounty. My kids are learning valuable life skills, and I am giving them homeschool credit for learning them!

And it warms my heart to see us working together as a family. You should see my oldest son teaching skills to his younger brother! And I look forward to the mornings when my daughter and I water the garden together. Vegetable gardening has become another way for us to bond as a family.

I have a gift for you!

Square Foot Garden Saga: The Box

It’s taken a LOT longer than I had planned to make my first Square Foot Garden (SFG). The delay was a result of my poor planning. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and that some of the necessary components would be so difficult to find.

The Box Itself

Since dealing with termites in the last house we lived in, I’ve avoided using wood products outdoors. I could’ve had my son build a frame for the raised garden bed from cedar (at a much lower cost), but I chose instead to purchase a vinyl raised garden bed from Home Depot.

Since shipping was free, my cost so far was $69.97. Alas, there were more costs in store for me. Read the rest of this entry

I Must Confess: I’m Addicted To Pinterest

Is there a 12-step program for Pinterest addiction?

Pinterest

It all started innocently enough with my reading a post on Tiffany Dow’s blog about Pinterest. It sounded interesting, so I took Tiffany up on her offer to send me a Pinterest invite. (At this time, access is by invitation only.) While I waited for the invitation to arrive via email, I looked around at all of the cool, amazing, useful, wacky, cute and pretty stuff there.

So just what IS Pinterest?

It’s just the latest social media hotspot! All the cool kids hang out there. And it’s stunningly visual. You create “pinboards” and you “pin” cool stuff to them. Check out MY Pinterest site by clicking HERE.

Cool, huh? Did you click on my pinboards? Did you follow the links to their sources, or to other pinners? Did you leave any comments? Did you see how social the site is? (Sorry for my giddiness overload, I don’t get out much…)

The possibilities are endless

Pinterest is a great way to connect with like-minded people, or connect with new ideas. Looking for new recipes, organization tips, or curriculum ideas? There’s a pinboard for that!

Can I use Pinterest for business?

You betcha! As long as you don’t get spammy about it, you can pin your own stuff. Just strive for balance, okay? Share others’ pins more than you share your own.

You can request a Pinterest invitation from the website. I’ve heard that it can take five days (or more) for you to receive a response. If you can’t wait, drop me a note on the Contact page with your email address (do NOT leave your email address in the Comments section!), and I’ll send you an invitation.

You can get a FREE Pinterest widget and plugin for your WordPress blog via “Plugins > Add New.” And there’s a Pinterest app for your smart phone that you can download from the main website.

Still have questions?

I have a FREE 7-page report that you can download called “Getting Started With Pinterest.” Well, not exactly free… You can download the report in exchange for leaving a comment. Not a bad deal! Just leave a comment below, and you’ll be taken to the download page right away.

Just be warned: Pinterest is addictive. I don’t know how many times I’ve told my kids, “I’ve got to pin just one more thing…” So if anyone knows of a 12-step program for Pinterest addiction, I’m all ears.
